Leadership in Arts Management Program
For Alumni of The Getty Foundation and Los Angeles County Arts Commission Undergraduate Internship Programs
Approximately twenty-five intern alumni will be selected to participate in seven monthly full day sessions devoted to arts management and leadership topics, and activities and discussions that explore leadership development. Participants will gain in-depth knowledge of a range of arts leadership and management topics affecting arts organizations, including key elements of nonprofit organizations (values, mission and vision), life cycle stages of nonprofit organizations, leadership vs. management, leadership styles and roles, boards of directors, development, nonprofit finance, marketing, advocacy and evaluation. In addition, a session topic will be selected by participants. Sessions will be facilitated by an experienced professional with monthly guest speakers providing lectures and activities around particular subject areas.
Program participants who attend all of the monthly sessions will be eligible to apply for a professional development grant of up to $1,500 to attend a conference or other professional development program. A brief proposal describing the activity, budget and timeline for the professional development activity, as well as a brief final report about the impact of the activity, will be required.
Background:
In 1999 The Getty Foundation and Los Angeles County Arts Commission formed a public-private partnership to support internships for undergraduate college students to gain work experience and training in the nonprofit arts sector. Since 1993, The Getty Foundation has supported more than 2,350 internships and since 1999, the County has supported 1,363 internships. The total number of intern alumni of both The Getty Foundation Multicultural Undergraduate Internship Program and Los Angeles County Arts Internship Program is now approximately 3,700.
Building on the successful model of the Arts Commission’s Arts Leadership Initiative (ALI), the Leadership in Arts Management Program will provide alumni of the Getty and County internship programs with foundational leadership and management training in arts administration through the formation of a learning group and small grants for a defined professional development activity. This program has been generously funded by The Getty Foundation.
