ADAAWE
ADAAWE is composed of seven diverse and multi-cultural women creating music of the voice and drum! They originate from Kenya, Israel, Panama, Morocco, Monatana, New York and California.
In the Adaawe tradition of Ghana, West Africa, women gather in the moonlight to create music and songs about lifeʼs joys and challenges. This tradition of celebration and strength is at the core of Adaawe’s style, which is an international fusion of African music and rhythms, R&B/pop vocals, jazz-funk, original creations and Gospel harmonies.
Since 1996, ADAAWE has performed locally and nationally at many colleges, universities, performing arts venues, music festivals, educational performances and community events. ADAAWE's opened for James Brown, Mickey Hart, Los Lobos, Yolanda Adams, Sugar Hill Gang, Michelle Shocked, Spearhead, James Ingram, Harry Belafonte and many others.
ADAAWE has been featured in: "The World Festival of Sacred Music - The Americas" documentary (Catchlight Films, 2000); The World Festival CD release (Bindu Records); "Sister Celebration" at The John Anson Ford Amphitheatre; Drum Magazine, March/April 2002 and L.A. Direct Magazine, May 2004. That same year, ADAAWE released a debut CD, Six Women Strong, and will be releasing their second album this year! ADAAWE's “vocal percussion” has been featured in an international Hyundai commercial and they currently appear in a movie trailer for LA radio station, KCRW 89.9 FM at Laemmle Theaters.
