Project Description

The 14,000 sq ft gymnasium and community building at Stephen Sorensen Park designed by Carde-Ten Architects will include a wood-floored gym, staff offices, full kitchen, multi-purpose room and a classroom. In 1987, residents of the rural Lake Los Angeles (population 11,500) initiated a self-imposed tax to raise money to develop and maintain a park. Development of the 100-acre site began in the 1990s and includes picnic tables, playground, basketball courts, a multi-purpose sports field and a baseball field. In 2003, the park was renamed to honor County Sheriff’s Deputy Stephen Sorensen, who was shot and killed in the line of duty. Artists Victor Henderson and Elizabeth Garrison have proposed a hand-painted mural, approximately 8’6”h x 16’6”w, for the interior wall of the community room. The design features many aspects of life in Lake Los Angeles, including an historic photograph of the lake. The artwork will be accented with exterior glazed tiles that feature footprints of the local wildlife.
